The History of Volkswagen
Volkswagen, often referred to as VW, is an auto manufacturer based in Germany, which was founded in 1937 by the German Labour Front. Headquarters were located in Wolfsburg, and the largest market for VW is China. The name Volkswagen means people’s car, which has been utilized throughout history in marketing the brand.
When Volkswagen was established, only the richest and more elite Germans could afford this method of transportation. The company was built to develop the people’s car, which was more affordable. The round shape of the first models and the rear-mounted engine became the Beetle.
Other manufacturers took one look at the Beetle and decided it wouldn’t be popular. VW proved them wrong as buyers were quite impressed with the unique-looking vehicle. The Beetle made its debut in the US in 1949 and in Canada in 1952. Sales continued to increase until Volkswagen of America was founded in 1955 when sales hit the one million point.
The Beetle continued to develop until it developed an appeal to a hipper buyer in the 1960s. It surpassed the Ford Model T as the most produced vehicle of a single make in history in 1972. By 1973, the Beetle had reached over 16 million units produced.
In 1961, Volkswagen expanded its line while it acquired Audi in 1964 as a way to develop a luxury brand. VW used the technology of the Audi to build new models, such as Golf and Passat. The Golf model took over as the flagship of the brand with the retirement of the Beetle in 1974.
The VW Golf has continued as the signature model for the manufacturer even as the New Beetle made its debut in the 1990s.
Models for Today
Today, VW still produces the Volkswagen Golf as one of its signature models. The VW Passat is another popular sedan that has a loyal following. Volkswagen also got on board with the demand for SUVs with its popular Atlas and Tiguan. Tiguan is the compact SUV while Atlas offers more room for families.
