What is in the CARFAX History Report?

As one would gather by name, CARFAX gives car facts. A vehicle history report tells you, the buyer, about the history of the vehicle you are considering buying. The first thing the report discusses is the “Vehicle Overview”, this is a summary of the vehicle model. It reviews the basic highlights of the vehicle. For example, the service records, the last reported odometer reading, the number of previous owners, and more.  Other sections, as you read in the report, are dedicated to other parts of the vehicle’s history, like, Detailed History, Ownership History, Title History, and Additional History.

History of Ownership

As implied, this portion outlines the previous ownership, whether there was only one previous owner, two previous owners or more. It also details the year the vehicle was purchased by each owner, where it was registered, the length of time each previous owner owned the vehicle, estimated annual miles each owner put on the vehicle, whether the vehicle was used for commercial use, personal use, personal rental purposes, and the last reported odometer reading.

Title History

This section examines whether the vehicle was damaged during previous ownership. CARFAX investigates whether the vehicle had flood, fire, or hail damage and an accurate odometer reading. The title section also shows the type of title, such as Rebuilt, Junk, Salvage, or Lemon.

Additional History

Here the report outlines issues that were reported such as past accidents and damages. It also checks for total loss reports, airbag deployment, structural damage, accident damage, odometer check, basic warranty, and manufacturer recalls.

Detailed History

A detailed history is a section that explains all events related to the vehicle chronologically. It is a timeline that includes the details of the times of accidents, purchases, service history, and more.

CARFAX obtains information from over 130,000 data sources which includes information from all Canadian Provinces and U.S. States and several auto auctions. Other sources include reports from fire and police departments, rental agencies, fleet management, collision repair facilities and more. CARFAX reports are available on vehicles from 1981 to the present. Getting a CARFAX report only requires the 17-digit Vehicle Identification Number (VIN). Once this number is submitted, a report is instantly generated from the 28 billion records in the CARFAX database.
