The History of the Q50
First debuting in 2013, the Q50 was originally based on the designs on a combination of INFINITI Essence with crescent-cut C-pillar, deep body section, asymmetrical cabin layout, interior finishes, and INFINITI Etheria with headlights, three-dimensional double arch grille and interior finishes. The first designs were frozen in Jun, 2011 after being designed by Joel Baek under Shiro Nakumura.
The Q50 sedan was unveiled at the 2013 North American International Auto Show at the Canadian International Auto Show, following with the Geneva Motor Show and the Dubai International Motor Show, the Auto Guanzhou Motor Show in China, and finally it was debuted in Victoria Harbour in Hong Kong.
Early North American Models included a 3.7-liter V6 engine (333 PS) and a 3.5L Hybrid (364 PS), each with a choice of Intelligent All-Wheel Drive or Rear Wheel Drive options. A selection of trim levels included a sport trim.
From its beginnings in 2013, the style of the Q50 continued to evolve over several years in various designs, including an exclusive Designer Edition in 2014 and a more refined hybrid version, a Q50L, a Q50 Eau Rouge concept, and a Q50 Eau Rouge Prototype, all in 2014. A version of the Q50 also was entered in the British Touring Car Championship for the 2015 season.
In 2016, Q50 got a model year update as the Q50 Red Sport 400 with a 3.0t (405 PS) with features that included:
- Sport styled front fascia
- Sport brakes with 4-piston front and 2 piston rear brake calipers
- Sport-tuned Digital Dynamic Suspension
- New rack-based Electronic Power Steering or optional Direct Adaptive Steering
- Leather-appointed sport seats
- Aluminum accented pedals
- Solid magnesium paddle shifters
- Exclusive Red Sport 400 brushed-finish exhaust tips
- Exclusive Red Sport 400 19-inch aluminum alloy wheels
- Chrome-finished red ‘S’ exterior sport badging on the front fenders and trunk
After this upgrade, the Q50 design specs followed a similar mold for the next several years with minor tweaks here and there until the design’s discontinuation in 2024 which was attributed to slowing sales and INFINITI’s decision to build only SUV designs.
What is left of the Q50 models provide wonderful power and performance that are equipped with a 3.0L V6 twin turbo-charged mill.
